In this lesson you will learn the definition of person and study examples of person.
Person Definition
  • Person:
  • used to show agreement between a noun or pronoun and a verb
  • changes form to show singular or plural
  • the verb "to be" changes form to indicate person and singular or plural
  • person in English can be any of the following: first person, second person, third person
  • first person
  • refers to the speaker "I" or speakers "we"
  • second person
  • refers to the listener or reader "you" or, the listeners or readers "you" (the singular and plural forms are the same)
  • third person
  • refers to a person "he", "she", "they", "those", or thing "it" outside of the conversation
  • includes all pronouns except  "I", "we", and "you"
  • singular distinguishes between male, female. For example: "he", "she"
  • plural does not distinguish between male, female, and objects. For example: "they", "those"

  • Person (first)
  • I will come tomorrow.
  • Bob showed the budget to us.
  • Person (second)
  • You should not forget to vote.
  • Where is your coat?
  • Person (third)
  • It arrived yesterday.
  • How can you stand working with them?
