Hi. In the classroom today you will learn a little about
Inauguration Day and President Barack Obama.
Inauguration Day is on January 20th of the year following a
presidential election in the United States.
The inauguration, or swearing-in, of the President of the United
States occurs at the beginning of a new Presidential term.
The United States Constitution mandates that the President make the
following oath or affirmation before he or she can enter the office
of the presidency.
I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the
Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my
Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United
States.
The swearing-in traditionally takes place at noon on Inauguration
Day at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., with the Chief
Justice of the United States administering the oath.
Barack Obama was born on August 4th, 1961.
He is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School.
Barack Obama is the first African American to be elected President
of the United States.
Barack Obama will be sworn-in as president today, January 20th, 2009
at noon.
He will be the forty-fourth President of the United States .
