Hi. In the classroom today you will learn about clauses, an important part of English grammar.

A clause is a group of words consisting of a subject and a predicate.

The two types of clauses are dependent clauses and independent clauses.

Dependent clauses cannot stand alone as sentences.

Look at the following sentence.

She has a tendency to cry when she is upset.

In this sentence, "when she is upset", is a dependent clause which cannot stand alone as a sentence.

Independent clauses can stand alone as grammatically viable simple sentences.

Look at the following sentence.

He is a bus driver.

This is an independent clause which can stand alone as a grammatically viable simple sentence.

Clauses are an important part of English grammar.

Until next time.
