Hi. In the classroom today you will learn about
parts of speech, an important part of English
grammar.
Parts of speech explain how words are used in English
Parts of speech are grouped into eight categories including the
following.
Nouns refer to a person, animal, place, thing, object,
substance, state, event, feeling, or abstract idea.
Pronouns take the place of a
noun or a noun phrase.
Verbs refer to an action (do, eat, talk) or a state (be,
like, own.)
Adverbs modify the meanings of other words including:
nouns,
pronouns,
verbs,
adverbs,
adjectives,
phrases,
sentences.
Adjectives modify, or describe, a
noun or a
pronoun.
Prepositions connect a
noun,
pronoun, or
phrase to other words in
a
sentence.
Conjunctions connect
phrases,
clauses, or other words.
Interjections are used mostly in speech to show emotion, gain attention,
exclaim, protest, or command.
The
parts of speech are an important
part of English
grammar.
