Definition of a subject
  • A subject is a word(s):

    • which is included in a complete sentence

    • which tells what, or whom the sentence is about

  • To find the subject of a sentence:

    • Do the following:

      1. find the verb

      2. then ask a question about the verb using "who" or "what" before the verb

      3. the answer is the subject

    • Example: The girl ate the cookie.

      1. the verb is ate

      2. the question would be: Who ate the cookie?

      3. the answer is The girl, which is the subject

Examples of subjects
  • Judy runs.

  • Judy and her dog run on the beach every morning.

  • The audience littered the floor with popcorn.
