| Definition of an indirect object |
- An indirect object is a word(s):
- which is usually the recipient of the
direct object
- To determine if a
verb in a
sentence has an indirect object:
- Do the following:
- find the
verb
- then ask a question about the
verb using "to whom", "to what", "for whom", or "for what"
- if there is an answer to this question in
the
sentence, then that word(s) is the indirect object
- Example: The teacher handed
the paper to the student.
- the
verb is handed
- the question would be: The teacher handed
the paper to whom?
- the answer is the student, which is the
indirect object
