In this lesson you will learn the definition of an indirect object and study examples of indirect objects.
Definition of an indirect object
  • An indirect object is a word(s):
  • which is usually the recipient of the direct object
  • To determine if a verb in a sentence has an indirect object:
  • Do the following:
  • find the verb
  • then ask a question about the verb using "to whom", "to what", "for whom", or "for what"
  • if there is an answer to this question in the sentence, then that word(s) is the indirect object
  • Example: The teacher handed the paper to the student.
  • the verb is handed
  • the question would be: The teacher handed the paper to whom?
  • the answer is the student, which is the indirect object
Examples of indirect objects
  • The teacher read the book to the students.
  • The manager gave the report to the secretary.
